 1. (tr.v.) to end or lay to rest or to make quiet
2. (tr.v.) to relieve, alleviate or mitigate
3. (intr.v.) to subside
 USAGE EXAMPLE 1 :
 All his doubts were allayed by the Governor.
 USAGE EXAMPLE 2 :
 Sheila Bair, chairman of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., sought to allay those worries Wednesday in an interview with The Associated Press.
